The Flames were from Johannesburg and led by the brothers Steve, Brother and Ricky Fataar. "Soulfire" (Rave (S)RMG (5)1234 / 1968) was their fourth album and it can be best described as soul-pop with hints of psychedelic. "Lost" and "If You Think You're Groovy" are one of the better tracks here. They did also a fair version of "You keep Me Hanging On" and "Solitude" is a masterpiece of eastern influenced psychedelic music. The rest of this album is pretty lame. "Useless Illusions" for instance is the biggest "Nights In White Satins" rip-off ever. The whole thing is not really my bag but it was a request and so I post it here (I've got this rip from Soulseek once, the bitrate is 128 kBit/s and there's sadly no artwork). You can find more informations about The Flames on theirwebsite.

From Johannesburg/South Africa the A-Cads where one of the best south-african Beat/R&B bands (whatever that means). Compare it to other groups around the world at that time they sound a bit weak to my ears. This CD (Crystal Emporium Productions CEP-012 / 1999) is a re-issue of their album from 1966 plus bonus tracks from guitar player Hank Squires solo efforts. There is also a websitewww.rock.co.za/files/acads.htmlwhere you can read their story with complete discography.

This one's by request and not my rip. McCully Workshop Inc. released one of the best (or the best?) albums that came out of South Africa. They were from Cape Town and led by Tully and Mike McCully. "The album features a variety of styles and influences including The Beatles, Frank Zappa and early Pink Floyd" (Brian Currin on the South Africa's Rock Legends site). The original LP was released by Trutone Records (Trutone STO 727). You can read their story here

Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue - applies to this record by the Finders Keepers, except that the "something blue" are mostly new compositions by various members of the group. Vocal is by John Allison, who comes from England, and we are wondering whether we detect something of Tommy Steele's influence in some of the numbers? Chris Anderson sings "Man of the Sea" and "Orient Green". The Finders Keepers perform in the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg and are tremendously popular wherever they appear. We are confident that something of this record will appeal to you. Remember, there are no fewer than seven new numbers of which any one can become tomorrow's hit tune. Add this record to your collection now and prevent later disappointment when stocks run low. (sleeve notes)
This is the CD-reissue (Phantom CD 26 / 2004) of the south-african psych/garage band from Johannesburg. The original album was released on "Bonus 134". The great garage mayhem "Man Of The Sea", the nice pop number "Your Loving" and the psychedelic "Reflections" are the best tracks to my ears. This one's by request.

Rare, original and hard to get music is the demand of that blog here. If a record is still available through mailorders I won't post it (but I make exceptions if I get the feeling the dealers force up the prices). Enjoy the music and... ...leave comments (or leave me alone).
