An influential band from Canterbury/Kent that underwent a fluctuate line-up and served as a stepping stone for most of the members to the better known Soft Machine and Caravan. The Wilde Flowers never made an official release up to 1994 as Voiceprint put out a collection of demos from 1965-69 (Voiceprint VP 123 CD). The majority of the tracks were recorded 65/66 and although the instrumentation is in the typical Beatsound, Robert Wyatt's and Kevin Ayers' vocal treatments had already that special Canterbury-style (it's up to you if you like it or not). I must admit that this release is more an artefact and rather of historical interest. There are a few notable songs, though: "Those Words They Say" and "Time After Time" get the full Beat treatment, "Impotence" has all the indications for the later Soft Machine adventures while the best and one of their earliest songs "He's Bad For You" is a haunting R&B ballad that would had fitted perfectly on a Captain Beefheart setlist.

After the split of Las Antorchas Victor Motta Aviles and band mate Omar Cortes Gaviño teamed up with Victor's brother Guillermo and continued as Antorcha. They played a sort of Acid-Rock but developed a style of their own. Actually not my kind of music but I like their anarchistic attitude and they receive extra points for the demented sound on few of their tracks. After a handful of E.P.'s they finally released an album in 1976. Shortly after they called it quits and 30 years later VAM Records (VAM 001-CD / 2006) put out a CD with all the tracks from their 45's plus "Mira" from their cassette-only release from 1976.

Duncan Browne's self-titled second album plays like a direct sequel to his debut long-player, Give Me Take You; he uses the same acoustic guitar and writes in a similar idiom, especially on tracks like "Country Song" and "The Martlet." Indeed, apart from the fact that it's generally better recorded, most of Duncan Browne could easily have slotted into the earlier album; the only exceptions are the more elaborately produced songs, such as "Ragged Rain Life," with its electric guitar sound, the keyboard-embellished "Babe Rainbow," and the bluesier, Dylan-esque "Journey," which was a substantial hit in England. Browne's style elsewhere on the record is unique unto himself, built around hauntingly beautiful melodies, mostly in a folk idiom, with some choice results, including the exquisite "Over the Reef" and "My Old Friends." He saved the best for last, a valedictory number entitled "Last Time Around," featuring extensive and impressive acoustic guitar ornamentation that gives way to some surprisingly tasteful progressive rock electronic sounds on the choruses. The RAK album was reissued on CD by EMI (EMI 724353562328) in 2002 with four bonus tracks, comprised of odd single sides and a pair of outtakes that extended the record's stylistic range considerably, into a more purely electric rock, more standard (though still enjoyable and attractive) singer/songwriter mode - although the last of the bonus tracks, the previously unissued "Mignon," is easily the prettiest song that Browne ever recorded and is thoroughly in the style of his first LP. Even overlooking its own intrinsic merits, Duncan Browne is worth owning as a more mature and developed, if slightly less spontaneous, expression of the sensibilities that forged Give Me Take You. From Toronto, Ontario. The stand-out track on their album is Sunday Love, which ranges from soft to strident keyboard-dominated psychedelia. Crying Into The Deep Lake is also excellent, a superb slice of psychedelia with a haunting keyboard intro. The remainder of the album pales into insignificance alongside these two tracks, but is nonetheless worth obtaining. Both their 45s were issued in black and white picture sleeves. The first is a wild non-LP punker, written by Jed MacKay and Rick McKim, with particularly eerie lyrics and frantic delivery. MacKay and McKim also produced the Underworld's single Go Away, and wrote the flip side Bound. (taken from "Dreams, Fantasies & Nightmares")
This re-issue (Void 18 / 2001) came with a bonus 45 (which was a reprint of their first single). More info on the Garagehangover site.

This cool early hardrock item has every bit as much garage attitude as the best '66 LPs. An enjoyable energizer with wild stories about murder and infidelity in a raunchy basement guitar/organ setting. Crappy press and one of the least professional band photos ever on the sleeve. A minor classic within the field. A 10" acetate recorded as Anvil in 1970 has also been found. (Patrick The Lama in "Acid Archives")
This late garage album has a rough sound, cheesy organ, simple hooks, and lyrics about the singer murdering his girlfriend. I like the cymbal-happy drummer and the fact that the bass is way too high in the mix. I can’t say the same about over-loud backing vocals, though. Overall, this is a decent garage-bordering-on-hard-rock album where the cheap production works both for it and against it. The songs and playing are decent; the energy level is high, the singer is appealing. The closing song rocks particularly hard. The only problem is that the “oh oh” vocals in the last couple of minutes are horribly out of tune, ending things on a sour note. That issue aside, most of you will enjoy this quite a bit. (Aaron Milenski in "Acid Archives")

Formed in Vancouver in 1968, their first 45 has become their most sought-after item. Described on their second album as a "happy mixture of psychedelic rock, blues-rock, jazz-rock with an overall country flavour" their material is an enjoyable and diverse mixture of styles. The first album is the stronger of the two, being the less country-influenced and more psychedelic. Crammed with excellent guitar-work throughout and fine harmony vocal arrangements, the highlights include the uptempo Times Are Changing, the great country-rocker One Glass For Wine, the dynamic lick-laden One Ring Jane, the sublime melancholy of Funny Feeling and the climatic slow-burning finale of Somebody Think, which can also be appreciated on Echoes In Time, Vol. 1. Recommended - an album to savour. The group was slated for inclusion on the Cool-Aid Benefit album but either Capitol or their management put the nix on it! (taken from "Dreams, Fantasies & Nightmares")
This album was re-issued on CD in 2000 but I never had the chance to get a copy of that. This rip is from another source and all you get here is the fantastic music but sadly not the artwork.

This Birmingham band released only one single in 1967 and was responsible for an unreleased acetate from 1970. Their 45 on Strike Records was rather uninteresting but the eight songs for the proposed album are much better. Some of you may know their opening song "From Out Of The Sky" from "Syde Tryps Three", a great heavy psychedelic number. "Desolation City" is a cool rocker without frills and "Some Lover" as well as "Can't Stop Loving You" are nice sunshiny pop-ditties. They also did two covers in a prog style, "Meet On The Ledge" and "Day Tripper"... at least they didn't ruin the "Fairport Convention" song. The slow Blues number "Mal's Got The Blues" is not of much interest and finally on "Dreaming" the vocal arrangements are a bit embarrassing. Birdman Records (Birdman BMRD-21001 / 1999) released their whole output on CD and it starts off with two songs they recorded after their reunion in 1998. Not the best idea 'cause both tracks are extreemly (Ha!) forgettable, a sort of poor man's "Scorpions" (uhhhh!). Some band members also had "Judas Priest" connections and their drummer Pete Boot was later in "Budgie".

The January Tyme was a bit late on the scene and their sound was pretty similar to the Jefferson Airplane. What makes this an enjoyable listen is the fact that they were competent musicians (OK, this should not be necessarily a question of quality), they had the skills to write good songs and they had a good female lead singer. Their sole platter was reissued by Akarma (Akarma AK 030 / 1998).

Hailed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they first started playing together in 1972. Both 45s are from their album, which contains quite a range of styles. Melodic soft rock predominates as evidenced by Give It Up, Tonight, Deep In A Dream, Keep It Heavy and Daydreamin'; but there's also a couple of weirder more psychedelic tracks in the early Pink Floyd mould - Numero Uno and The Beat Song; some rockabilly/punk (I'm) Chewin' Gum and When The Sun Shines and a bit of punk/blues on That ls That. Overall, it's worth investigating. (taken from "Fuzz, Acid and Flowers")

The Charlatans were the very first San Francisco underground rock band. At the start the group played Chuck Berry numbers and R&B standards like Got My Mojo Working and My Babe but gradually they evolved the folk rock repertoire for which they had become famous. Eventually the group were offered a residency at the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada. Here The Charlatans acted as a magnet for the whole hippy scene. News of them soon got around and acid heads came from Reno, 'Frisco and as far afield as Seattle and Los Angeles to hear them play. The Red Dog Saloon predated any of the San Francisco venues, and at the time it was the only place on the West Coast where you could hear the new music. But things began to go wrong. Despite being packed almost every night, the saloon made a loss because no admission charge was levied so profits could only be made from beer and wine sales. The owner had left his 22 year old son in charge and was not pleased when he found, on returning to discover the reasons for this loss, that everyone was having a ball at his expense. To make matters worse his visit coincided with two members of the group getting busted on the way back from San Francisco with more drug supplies for the group. Eventually the band headed back to San Francisco for good, taking with them a reputation on a par with anybody. Before long, record companies began to take an interest in them and they eventually signed with the Lovin' Spoonful's label, Kama Sutra. In retrospect, they would have done better to wait for a company to offer them the sort of advance RCA had offered The Jefferson Airplane. The group cut a nine-track album for Kama Sutra which included the Buffy St. Marie song Codine (later recorded by many other 'Frisco bands), amazing versions of traditional songs like Alabama Bound and 32-20 Blues, and the old Coasters' song The Shadow Knows and two songs featuring Lynne Hughes, who worked as a barmaid at the Red Dog Saloon (and later sang with Tongue and Groove and Stoneground) on vocals - Side Track and I'd Rather Be The Devil. The Charlatans had wanted Codine backed by 32-20 released as a single, but the record company got cold feet because of the mention of 'drugs' in Codine and cut off all contact with the band. This was disasterous for The Charlatans and ironic when one considers that the song was condemning drugs rather than advocating their use. At this point, Mike Ferguson left the group to join Tongue and Groove with Lynne Hughes, to be replaced by Patrick Bogery, and Dan Hicks gave up the drums to concentrate on the rhythm guitar. So Terry Wilson, who had been playing with David LaFlamme and Jaime Leapold in a group called The Orkustra came in on the drums. But they struggled to get work and Hicks, Bogerty and Hunter left the group for good. Hicks to set up Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. The remaining three (Wilhelm, Olsen and Wilson) recruited a keyboard player Darryl De Vore and were determined to have a final fling. The tragic story of The Charlatans, probably one of San Francisco's most talented bands, that of a group taken for a ride by its record company, was sadly typical of this era. (taken from "Fuzz, Acid & Flowers")
Their album (Philips PHS 600-309 / 1969) was a bit disappointing if you compare it with their earlier works but it's not a "mediocre affair" as it described in "Fuzz, Acid & Flowers". They did a competent version of Van Dyke Park's "High Coin" and "Time To Get Straight" is a fine folk rocker. Also notable is the last song "When The Movies Are Over", which is a weird and trippy number.

Old Rock'n'Roller wilders in the "Mystic Male" territory (the same way Del Shannon and Bobby Vee did). Born in Teaneck/New Jersey as Eric Hilliard "Ricky" Nelson he was a bit of a second hand Elvis impresario but with a huge success. Between 1957 and 1962 he had thirty Top-40 hits but at the end of the '60s his records were no longer selling. These two albums from 1967 and 1968 were fine examples of soft rock with psychedelic undertones and saw a reissue on one CD by Ace Records (Ace CDCHD 690 / 1998).

From Los Angeles/California, this group made a pretty good laid back Rock record at the end of the decade that was re-issued in the '90s (Eight Little Indians CD 3027 / 1998). The critics are divided in their opinion about the privately pressed album. They differ from "Lost gem" to "mostly loungy (in the wrong sense) psychrock/AOR with offkey vocals and unimpressive songwriting" to "A strange one that’s gotten more attention than it deserves, but if you don’t get your hopes up too high you might enjoy it". I like it and I think it's pretty adventurous although they lose the direction sometimes. You better make up your own mind.
LATEST UPDATE: It turned out that Jungle was previously known as The Knight Riders from Belmont/California who had the track "I" on the San Francisco Roots compilation. Bass player Rodney Pearce and drummer Mike Lentos were replaced by John Dawson and Delbert Lang. They recorded their eponymous album at Allegro Sound Studios, New York City 1969.

Subtitled as "Eccentric Sounds From The British Underground 1970-73" this compilation tends more towards progressive sounds than psychedelic. This CD (Queen Victoria QVR-2006CD / 2003) combines the best songs from the two comps "Here Lies Ebenezer Goode" and "Spacegirl And The Starman", also released on the Queen Victoria Label. Although the timespan of the music is a bit late for my taste there are still some interesting tracks. The "Parson-Smith" version of "The Letter" is a wonderful relaxed number whilst "Deadwood" wilders more in the Freakbeat territory. Winners come also from "Paradise Hammer", "Quartet", "Frog" and "Eastwood". However the most interesting track is to my ears by the "Rainbow Family".

Rare, original and hard to get music is the demand of that blog here. If a record is still available through mailorders I won't post it (but I make exceptions if I get the feeling the dealers force up the prices). Enjoy the music and... ...leave comments (or leave me alone).
