This Auckland band's debut album was one of the best Garage/R&B/Mod efforts that came out of New Zealand. On their follow up "Find Us A Way" they veered towards to a more but less interesting Mod/Soul style. They continued to release further albums till the '70s. This CD (Ascension ANCD018 / 2000) contains the cool first album (with their fantastic version of "How Is The Air Up There?"), some tracks from the aforementioned second release and all their 45's from 1966-67, most notably the great garage punker "Don't You Stand In My Way". There's also an other compilation around. You can find it on thePessimist Clubblogspot.

From Upper Hutt/New Zealand The Fourmyula were the most successful sixties act in their homeland. They had seven top ten hits as well as some top thirty entrees. Their first album was well received and they recorded up to 1970 three more longplayers. Most of their material is pretty much in the pop-psych vein best compared with UK band like "Wizard Of Oz" or "Toby Twirl". This twenty track compilation was released by EMI New Zealand (EMI 7243 5219242 7 / 1999).

Haven't heard this collection of Larry's Rebels since 20 years. But once somebody requested it I gave it another try. I knew that this album was pretty good but I forgot HOW good it was. They were from Auckland/New Zealand and released a bunch of 45's plus two albums. Raven collects their best work on one record (Raven Records RVLP-14 / 1983) entitled "Feelin' Good" with a bonus single. If you hear this LP you will agree that this was one of New Zealand's finest psych/pop/freak beat bands. Their covers of Small Faces/Who/Creation songs are first grade and their own songs hold the standard. Recommended.

The Dedikation were from Upper Hutt near Wellington and their interpretation of the Marmalade number "Wait For Me Mary-Anne" reached number 2 in the New Zealand charts. It was a pretty good piece of psych-pop with lots of phasing. Their follow up "Ruby Tuesday" (charted at No. 12) was a ridiculous version of the Rolling Stones song. Every time I hear the track I can't get Kermit the Frog out of my mind. Their only album (reissued on Breeder Backtrack Archive Series BY 843088 / 2001) contains the two hit singles and a really great remake of the Cryan' Shames "Greenburg, Glickstein, Charles, David Smith & Jones", with loads of phasing and psychedelic behaviour. Also notable is "Pretender" that could easily fit onto a mod-allnighter. If you dig late sixties sounds like Apple and/or Grapefruit (it's not as good as THAT though) this one's might be for you.

It is said that their debut 45 "The Psychedelic Illusion" was the first psychedelic record in New Zealand. Their album contains their magnum opus "Tropic Of Capricorn", their cover of "Elevator" with heavy phasing effects, and the quasi-psychedelic "You'll Find Me Anywhere" and "Conquistador Esses". What's left are some fillers, mostly in the pop vein, and two covers of "Kaleidoscope" and "Daytime, Nighttime" (here retitled as "Each & Every Day"). Their bonus tracks are totally forgettable. The band was from Auckland and also recorded under the name "Chris Parfitt & The Hi-Revving Tongues" or simply "The Tongues".
Tracklist: - Elevator - Love is a hurting thing - You'll find me anywhere - Mike's tune - Baby I need your lovin' - Spooky - Conquistador esses - Forgive me my love - Tropic of capricorn

Rare, original and hard to get music is the demand of that blog here. If a record is still available through mailorders I won't post it (but I make exceptions if I get the feeling the dealers force up the prices). Enjoy the music and... ...leave comments (or leave me alone).
