This Birmingham band released only one single in 1967 and was responsible for an unreleased acetate from 1970. Their 45 on Strike Records was rather uninteresting but the eight songs for the proposed album are much better. Some of you may know their opening song "From Out Of The Sky" from "Syde Tryps Three", a great heavy psychedelic number. "Desolation City" is a cool rocker without frills and "Some Lover" as well as "Can't Stop Loving You" are nice sunshiny pop-ditties. They also did two covers in a prog style, "Meet On The Ledge" and "Day Tripper"... at least they didn't ruin the "Fairport Convention" song. The slow Blues number "Mal's Got The Blues" is not of much interest and finally on "Dreaming" the vocal arrangements are a bit embarrassing. Birdman Records (Birdman BMRD-21001 / 1999) released their whole output on CD and it starts off with two songs they recorded after their reunion in 1998. Not the best idea 'cause both tracks are extreemly (Ha!) forgettable, a sort of poor man's "Scorpions" (uhhhh!). Some band members also had "Judas Priest" connections and their drummer Pete Boot was later in "Budgie".

Hailing from Adelaide, Doug Ashdown was an extremely gifted musician as a youth and managed to travel to England and play in a rock band only to return to Adelaide and hitch up with Bobby Bright and The Bowmen. As a solo artist Ashdown rose to prominence in the mid to late sixties, playing at and developing his style through the thriving folk scene. His first album, This Is Doug Ashdown, is a fine example of this style, varying between sentimental Irish ballads, mid-tempo protest songs and fast picking hoe-downs. The relative sparsity of the album, Ashdown's guitar largely unaccompanied throughout, reveals the artist in his element, a vivacity which permeates the recording and compensates for the album's occasional awkward moments. His second album, The Real Thing, and 1968's Source represent a continuation and expansion of this sound. He progressively and successfully incorporated an element of psychedelia into his otherwise homespun style through the use of organ, strings and the occasional sound effect. Ashdown crystalized this progression on his 1970 album, The Age Of Mouse, a more mature work, diverse yet cohesive, with Ashdown utilizing a full band sound for the majority of songs for the first time. It was critically acclaimed and was accepted for world wide release by MCA. (taken from "Dreams, Fantasies & Nightmares")
This fine album, that brings sometimes Gene Clarks "Echoes" to mind and contains the great stand-out psychedelic track "I've Come To Save Your World", was reissued a few years ago (Estrella Rockera ER 42115 / 2005) but it did run quickly out of stock (I saw an offer on Amazon for around 70$ for the CD!!!). Doug Ashdown has wryly commented that the prices currently being asked on the Internet are more than he was paid to record it! You can find more information about Doug Ashdown on theMILESAGOwebsite.

Volume 2 (BFD-5019 / 1979) of this classic collection of Garage Punk and the second installment is my favourite. The whole compilation is from the start up to the end a revelation (OK, maybe not the Bobby Fuller song).

The January Tyme was a bit late on the scene and their sound was pretty similar to the Jefferson Airplane. What makes this an enjoyable listen is the fact that they were competent musicians (OK, this should not be necessarily a question of quality), they had the skills to write good songs and they had a good female lead singer. Their sole platter was reissued by Akarma (Akarma AK 030 / 1998).

This rather lightweight vocal harmony outfit, evolved out of Robb Storme and The Whispers. They started playing quasi-psychedelic pop music in 1967. They had a No 1 in France with their debut single Hyacinth Threads although their future singles including a cover of The Rolling Stones' Sing This All Together did not happen at home. Their album was produced by John Peel and was largely comprised of cover versions of Elton John/Bernie Taupin material such as Take Me To The Pilot, which was also released as a single. It also included Dylan's Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You and Denny Laine's Say You Don't Mind. A revitalised Morgan Bluetown label produced an album, Let's Take A Trip On... (Morgan Blue Town MBT 50003) in 1988. Containing 16 tracks in all, it includes all the Columbia 'A' and 'B' sides (except the third), but none of the later Parlophone ones. Sadly there are no sleevenotes at all to suggest where the other tracks originate from. Wilson Malone recorded a self-titled solo album as Wil Malone in 1970 for Fontana and was also in Motherlight. The mother of all garage compilations (OK, Lenny Kaye's "Nuggets" is the grandma). This is the vinyl edition (BFD-5016 / 1979) and some technical oddities are happening here. On some songs (notably The Squires' "Going All The Way" and the Grains Of Sand's "Going Away Baby") you can hear at the end of the tracks very slightly music by an other band. On "Rich With Nothin" by The Split Ends it looks like that the compilers mixed an echo-effect in the mid of the song. And finally on Litter's "Action Woman" are two (now famous) skips. But for a 15 year old kid that I was back then the whole compilation was hot as lava.

Hailed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they first started playing together in 1972. Both 45s are from their album, which contains quite a range of styles. Melodic soft rock predominates as evidenced by Give It Up, Tonight, Deep In A Dream, Keep It Heavy and Daydreamin'; but there's also a couple of weirder more psychedelic tracks in the early Pink Floyd mould - Numero Uno and The Beat Song; some rockabilly/punk (I'm) Chewin' Gum and When The Sun Shines and a bit of punk/blues on That ls That. Overall, it's worth investigating. (taken from "Fuzz, Acid and Flowers")
OK, I know that "Tricky Zingers" was already posted on several blogs but it is one of my favourites. Rip is from the original album (Trinity CST-11-LA / 1975).

This is by request. There's no need to give you further information about the second album because it's all said on the wonderfulDive Into Yesterdayblog. Not my rip but a pretty good overview of the swedish '60s scene. On this 3 CD-Set (EMI 724347515729 / 1996) you will find all kinds of heights (and all kinds of low). 20% good, 30% OK and 50% uninteresting/boring stuff to my ears. If you already have the fantastic "Searching For Shakes" and the promisng "Who Will Buy Those Wonderful Evils" compilations than you probably don't need this one (although the pop tunes on disc 3 may interest some).

Rare, original and hard to get music is the demand of that blog here. If a record is still available through mailorders I won't post it (but I make exceptions if I get the feeling the dealers force up the prices). Enjoy the music and... ...leave comments (or leave me alone).
